Types of pushchair
Pushchairs can be divided into 3 main types: strollers, all-terrain and travel systems. Some fit into more than 1 category. For instance, a 3-wheeled pushchair with pneumatic wheels that can be used with a car seat falls into both the all-terrain and travel system categories.
Strollers
Strollers are generally the cheapest type of pushchair. They're ideal for day-to-day use and the best ones can be folded using just one hand.
Some models aren't suitable for newborns because they don't recline flat for the baby to sleep, and many aren't ideal for bumpy journeys as they have hard plastic wheels and no suspension.
These are generally lightweight and compact, good if you live in a flat or rely on public transport. They’re easy to carry up and down stairs and great for chucking in the back of the car, nipping to the shops or taking on holiday.
All-terrain
All-terrain pushchairs are typically 3-wheelers with pneumatic tyres and sometimes suspension which makes them good for bumpy terrain.
They're bulky compared with strollers and can be unwieldy on steps and kerbs. These will suit outdoorsy parents who spend their free time in the countryside, or people who want to run with their baby.
The pushchairs tend to be large and can be tricky to store, so make sure there’s enough room at home and in your car boot. They can be difficult to manoeuvre around shops, and on and off public transport.
Smaller, lighter versions tend to be basic and may not have the suspension to handle well on rough ground.
Travel systems
Travel systems are versatile but pricey pushchairs that can be used with a car and/or carrycot (but these aren't always included in the price).
The main benefit is you can transfer your baby between car, pushchair, and house without disturbing them. That's great if you spend a lot of time in the car – on the school run, shopping etc. Some car seats and carrycots slide on to the chassis, others clip on or are fastened with Velcro.
But there are drawbacks. You’ll need space to store the various components when you’re not using them, and not all car seats are compatible with all chassis. We'd urge you to buy one of our car seats for babies up to 13kg.
